Spring Has Sprung!

March 5, 2017

Greeting, fellow Chesssmates!

As we pry ourselves free of winter's icy grip, signs of spring are all around us. Bulbs are popping in my planter, and an osprey has been sighted at Beverly Beach, near Annapolis.

The clock is ticking for you to wrap up winter maintenance and prepare for spring launching.

Possible CHESSS Warm-up Race:

As shorthanders, it's important for us to get out there and blow off the rust.  We'll be racing among crewed boats and we need to make sure that we're competitive and safe. The board is discussing a "warm-up" event somewhere in the Annapolis area in April. Details are still being ironed out, so stay tuned.

Burgee Status:

Final, minor adjustments are nearly complete on the club burgee and we hope to start taking orders this week. We're hosting a social at Union Jack's pub in Annapolis on April 15th and we'd prefer to hand out as many burgees  there as possible to reduce any shipping costs.

2017 Race Schedule Snippets:

Although the CBYRA calendar is not yet up on their website, we do know that our seasonal "kick off" race, is the WRSC Shorthanded Classic, on Saturday, May 6th at 11am.  The NOR/SI's will be posted on Regatta Network soon.

The PSA Moonlight Race is Saturday, June 10th with a 1600 Warning Horn.

The SSC Twilight Race is set for June 24th.  Once the calendar has been published, I'm sure there will be other races in May and June.

Membership:

I'd like to thank our existing members for taking the time to fill out the membership form. I'd also like to welcome many new members who have signed up over the winter. We had quite an influx of multi-hull sailors which adds to our diversity.  According to our Outreach board member, we're up to around 160 regular members.  We really hope to see you "on the line" this year.

CHESSS Challenges:

We realize that racing doesn't appeal to everyone and it was always my vision that CHESSS be more than just another yacht racing club. The pressure of the starting sequence, tactics, keeping the boat in racing condition, etc. yet members still want to increase their shorthanding experience and socialize with other members. Garner Bennett is making excellent progress in creating our Challenge program where members will solo or doublehand their boat in convoys to various destinations on the bay. Upon arrival, there will be socialization and lessons learned discussions. These events will start out simple and then increase in difficulty over time.

We'd like to get a reading on the interest in CHESSS Challenges. If you are interested in participating, please email dmc650@hotmail.com.

See you out there!

Rich A.
